HI00001 is the first archeological resource ever
to be listed in Hillsborough County. It is the Thomas Mound, dating back
perhaps 4,500 years. A 1952 Florida
Geological Survey (8mb PDF) reports as many as
400 burials were found at the site.
Archeologists and historians have told us there is strong evidence that
DeSoto landed at the mouth of the Little
Manatee River in 1539 and had an encampment in the area of this site and
had contact with
Native Americans in this region.
